A Shit Deal: Capitalism's Ecological Rift

No historical period illustrates ecological imperialism better than the nineteenth century Peruvian guano trade when Europe's extractive agricultural practices began threatening soil ecology which fueled the imperialist grip on the southern hemisphere. This talk will weave contemporary issues of imperialist wars fought on behalf of industry, international trade, and the autonomy of the Global South through the historical lens of the then-burgeoning field of soil science and its influence on Marx's own ecological awareness.
