Join us on Tuesday, August 25th, for a listening party to celebrate the publication of Signal Hill’s third issue. Signal Hill is an audio magazine that publishes sonic stories in myriad forms: long-form reporting, experimental essays, fiction, profiles, dispatches, and more.

The latest issue features an oral history of a poetry-writing class taught at Manhattan’s PS61 in 1969. Guided by New York School poet Kenneth Koch (friend of Frank O’Hara and John Ashbery), these elementary school students wrote poems of surprising subtlety and depth. Their work became the basis of Koch’s seminal book on verse pedagogy for children, Wishes, Lies, and Dreams. More than 50 years later, radio documentarian Jess Shane tracked Koch’s students down to ask them what poetry has meant for their lives.

On Tuesday night at 7pm, we’ll sit together with tea and snacks, and listen to the story as a group (~45 minutes). Then we’ll respond to some of the prompts and exercises in Wishes, Lies, and Dreams, and discuss. We encourage everyone to bring a note/sketch-book for use during both the listening and writing portions of the night.
