Join veteran radio artist Elizabeth Flood for a fun, participatory group project on radio transmission. We’ll begin with a group reading of Anna Friz's essay 30 Radio Days and Nights, go over a bit of brief radio history, ideas about signal vs noise, privatized vs plebeian radio, lots of thinking around radio and Hertzian space. The second part of the event is a group activation called Bug Tag/ How to Build a Meadow. We will use a low power transmitter without the antenna on, and begin transmitting cricket sounds. We will have at least 10-12 [battery operated] radios available and participants will scan the radio dial and listen for the crickets. When the crickets have been found, we’ll explore the range of transmission, walking around with the radio to find the edge of transmission and placing the radio down on the floor. When all the radios are down, and they are all tuned to the crickets, we will have built a meadow. Liz will then put the antenna on, expanding the range of transmission. We’ll then repeat the activity, marking on the map however far away they can find the transmission. We will come back and compare maps - each radio has different strengths, so all of our ranges will be different. Radio is a naturally occurring phenomena in space and something you can walk around inside of.
